What is Number Porting?
Number porting lets you keep the phone numbers your customers already know while changing the carrier behind them. Whether you are consolidating numbers from several suppliers, migrating a contact centre to a new platform or moving a whole enterprise estate onto Dollu, our porting desk manages the process end to end: eligibility checks, letters of authorisation, carrier coordination, scheduling and cut-over, and post-port validation.
Porting rules differ enormously by country. Some markets port geographic numbers in a day; others take weeks and require notarised documents. Toll-free porting has its own procedures, such as RespOrg changes in the US. Mobile ranges, shared-cost and premium ranges each have their own constraints. We maintain the process, documentation and realistic timeline for every country we serve and share them with you before you commit, so project plans are built on facts rather than hope.
Bulk porting is a project, not a form. For migrations of hundreds or thousands of numbers we assign a project lead who validates your inventory against carrier records, groups numbers into logical batches, schedules cut-over windows to suit your operations, coordinates with the losing carrier and reports progress against a shared tracker. Numbers can be routed on Dollu before the port completes so testing happens on live configuration and the switch is a routing change, not a scramble.
Port-out is handled with the same professionalism. If a number needs to leave Dollu we release it promptly and without obstruction, in line with regulation, after authenticating the request to protect you from unauthorised transfers. Ported-in numbers keep every Dollu capability - SIP delivery, routing, failover, analytics and, where the range supports it, SMS - so hosted messaging on ported numbers works from day one. Progress on every number is visible in the portal and via webhooks, so your own onboarding or migration tooling can track milestones without chasing emails.
Why choose Dollu for number porting.
The advantages of buying from a carrier that owns its network, interconnects and operations - rather than a reseller.
Keep the numbers customers know
Change carrier without changing a single line on your website, business cards or ad campaigns; customers keep dialling the same numbers and nothing looks different.
Consolidate onto one platform
Bring numbers scattered across legacy carriers, acquired businesses and regional suppliers into one Dollu portal, one invoice and one set of routing rules.
Certainty on timelines
Country-specific processes and realistic durations shared upfront so migrations are planned properly, with progress tracked and communicated throughout.
Zero-downtime cut-over
Numbers are configured and tested on Dollu before the port; on activation the routing is already live and inbound calls continue without interruption.
A desk that owns the outcome
Named porting specialists chase losing carriers, resolve rejections and escalate to regulators where needed so you are not the one making calls.
Capabilities in detail.
Everything included with Number Porting - the platform features, options and controls you get from day one.
- 01
Eligibility and portability checks
Verify each number's carrier, range type and portability before starting; identify numbers that need special handling, such as bundled or contracted numbers.
- 02
LOA and documentation management
Country-specific letter-of-authorisation templates, guidance on required proofs such as recent invoices, and a document vault so paperwork is right first time.
- 03
Carrier coordination
Submission to the losing carrier or national porting system, rejection handling with clear reasons and remedies, and re-submission without restarting the clock where possible.
- 04
Bulk migration projects
Named project lead, batch planning, scheduled cut-over windows, shared progress tracker and post-port validation for migrations of hundreds to tens of thousands of numbers.
- 05
Pre-port routing configuration
Configure SIP delivery, failover, IVR and schedules for each number before the port date so activation is instant and testable.
- 06
Toll-free and RespOrg changes
US 8xx RespOrg transfers and toll-free port-in in the UK, EU, APAC and elsewhere, including ITFS numbers where the country permits.
- 07
Port-out handling
Prompt, compliant release of numbers leaving Dollu, with authentication to prevent unauthorised port-out and clear communication with the gaining carrier.
- 08
Status API and notifications
Track porting milestones per number in the portal or via API webhooks - submitted, accepted, scheduled, completed, rejected - with email alerts to your team.
- 09
Hosted messaging on ported numbers
Where the range supports SMS, ported numbers can be SMS-enabled on Dollu so hosted two-way messaging works from the moment voice cuts over.
How it works.
From first conversation to live traffic - a tracked, engineer-led onboarding with a named owner at every step.
- Step 01
Submit inventory
Upload the numbers you want to port. We check portability, identify range types and carriers, and return the process, documents and timeline for each country.
- Step 02
Prepare documents
Complete country-specific LOAs and provide proofs such as a recent carrier invoice; our desk validates everything before submission to avoid rejections.
- Step 03
Configure and schedule
Set routing and failover for each number on Dollu in advance; agree cut-over batches and windows that suit your operations.
- Step 04
Port and validate
We coordinate with the losing carrier, activate on the scheduled date and run test calls per batch. Progress and any exceptions are reported in the tracker.
- Step 05
Close and optimise
Once all batches are complete we confirm the estate, decommission legacy trunks with you and hand over to your account manager for ongoing changes.
Which number type fits.
Local, national, mobile, toll-free and short code numbers solve different problems - and carry different KYC and activation profiles. Availability by country is on the coverage matrix.

| KYC burden | Low to medium; a local address is required in some countries | Low; company registration is usually enough | Medium to high; enhanced KYC and limited stock | Medium; a local entity in some countries | High; operator and regulator approval per code |
| SMS-capable | In selected countries (for example US, Canada, UK) | Rarely | Yes - two-way | In selected countries (US and Canada toll-free SMS) | Yes - the primary purpose |
| Caller pays? | Yes, at local rate | Yes, at national or geographic rate | Yes, at mobile rate | No - the number holder pays for inbound | Not applicable; inbound SMS charged at the sender鈥檚 standard rate |
| Activation time | Same day to a few days after KYC approval | Same day to a few days | Days; stock-dependent | Days; regulator registration in some countries | Weeks; carrier approval per country |
