Overview

What is Mobile Virtual Numbers?

A mobile virtual number is a number from a country's mobile numbering range that lives in Dollu's network instead of on a SIM. It can receive and, where regulation allows, send SMS, and it can receive and place voice calls - all delivered to your application over API, SMPP or SIP rather than to a handset. Mobile numbers are recognised by consumers as personal, replyable numbers, and by many services as valid destinations for verification codes.

Dollu provisions mobile virtual numbers in more than 40 countries through our own mobile allocations and direct agreements with mobile network operators and MVNOs. Inbound SMS is delivered via webhook or SMPP with full sender, timestamp and concatenation handling; outbound replies ride our 800+ SMS operator connections. Voice on the same number is delivered over SIP with the same routing and failover as any Dollu DID.

Typical uses include two-way conversational messaging where customers can reply, receiving one-time passcodes and verification messages for automated account workflows, giving field staff or gig workers a work mobile identity on their own device, and mobile-first customer contact in markets where consumers ignore landline or short-code senders. Availability, SMS capability and permitted use differ by country and are shown in the portal before you order.

Because mobile numbers are attractive to fraudsters, we apply KYC on every account, usage policies per country and traffic monitoring for bulk account creation, SIM-farm-like patterns and spam. Numbers are provisioned and released through the API with webhooks, so platforms can allocate them per user or per session and recycle them under configurable cooling-off periods. Message and call logs are retained per number for reconciliation and compliance, and the same account, portal and invoice cover your DIDs, toll-free numbers and SMS traffic, so a mobile identity is one more capability rather than another supplier.

Why Dollu

Why choose Dollu for mobile numbers.

The advantages of buying from a carrier that owns its network, interconnects and operations - rather than a reseller.

  • Numbers customers reply to

Consumers treat messages from mobile numbers as personal and replyable, lifting response rates for support, sales and appointment conversations compared with short codes or alphanumeric senders.

  • Automate verification workflows

Receive OTPs and verification SMS on programmable numbers to test, monitor and automate account and onboarding flows across countries.

  • Voice and SMS on one identity

Give a user, agent or bot a single mobile number that can talk and text, delivered to your app over SIP and API rather than to a physical SIM.

  • Programmable and elastic

Allocate numbers per user, per conversation or per session through the API, release them when done and let cooling-off rules keep pools clean.

  • Compliant by country

We publish what each country permits - inbound only, two-way, voice - and enforce it, so your use of mobile numbers stays within operator and regulator rules.

Both are hosted in Dollu's network and delivered to you over IP. A mobile virtual number is drawn from a country's mobile numbering range, so it looks like a handset number to consumers and to many services that send SMS. Regular DIDs are typically geographic or national ranges and, in many countries, cannot receive SMS at all.
