Overview

What is Local & Geographic Numbers?

A geographic number carries an area code that people associate with a specific city or region - a London 020, a Mumbai 022, a New York 212 or a Sydney 02. Callers see a familiar local number, pay local rates and are more likely to answer or return a call. Dollu holds geographic inventory in more than 100 countries and 8,000 cities, sourced through our own numbering allocations and direct agreements with incumbent and alternative operators.

Local numbers behave exactly like any other Dollu DID: calls are answered in our geo-redundant core and delivered over SIP to any endpoint you choose, anywhere in the world. A sales team in Noida can answer a Manchester number; a support desk in Manila can answer a Toronto number. Routing, failover, schedules and channel limits are configured per number in the portal or via API and can be changed at any time.

Geographic numbers are the most regulated class of numbering. Many countries require a business or residential address within the area code, proof of identity, and sometimes an end-user declaration before a number can be activated. Our compliance desk maintains the requirements for every country, tells you exactly what is needed before you order, validates documents once and reuses them across future orders.

The result is a local footprint without local infrastructure: no branch office, no local carrier contract, no hardware. Expand into a new city with a number in minutes, test a market before committing, and consolidate every local number you own into one portal, one invoice and one NOC. Because the numbers are Dollu numbers, they can also be presented as verified caller ID on outbound calls through our SIP trunking, so a sales team calling into a city shows a number from that city and receives the call-back on the same route.

How it fits together

Reading the diagramA caller dials your local, national or toll-free number. The in-country operator hands the call to Dollu over a direct interconnect; the numbers platform applies translation, CLI and routing rules and delivers the call over SIP to the endpoint you configured - PBX, UCaaS, contact centre, Voice API application or a PSTN forward. OPTIONS health checks and a per-number failover chain keep calls arriving when a primary endpoint is down.
Why Dollu

Why choose Dollu for local numbers.

The advantages of buying from a carrier that owns its network, interconnects and operations - rather than a reseller.

  • Local presence, global operations

Present a local number in every market you sell to while answering calls from wherever your team sits. Callers pay local rates and see a number they recognise.

  • Better answer and response rates

Outbound calls presenting a local geographic CLI are answered materially more often than calls from foreign or non-geographic numbers, improving sales and collections outcomes.

  • No local entity or hardware required

In most countries you can hold local numbers as a non-resident business. Where an address is required we advise on compliant options and manage the filing.

  • Regulation handled by specialists

Our compliance desk tracks numbering rules across 100+ countries so you do not have to, and keeps your documentation current as rules change.

  • One platform for every city

Manage London, Frankfurt, Singapore and São Paulo numbers with the same routing rules, CDRs, API and invoice - no per-country logins.

Still have a question?

Ask our solutions team

Geographic numbers signal local presence and are cheap or free for callers to dial from mobiles and landlines. They are ideal for local sales, service and branch use. National and toll-free numbers suit centralised brands or when you want to absorb the caller's cost. Many customers use a mix and route all of them to the same platform.
